{ }, [ ]: brackets

  • { }는 curly brackets, [ ]는 square brackets라고도 함
  • 근데 편의상 brackets로 퉁침


a x b: a times b / a multiplied by b


a ÷ b: a divided by b


a/b: a over b

  • 수로 나올 경우 분자는 양수사(one, two, three, etc)로 분모는 서수사(third, fourth, fifth, etc)로 읽음
  • 1/5는 'one over five'로도 'one fifth'로도 읽을 수 있음
  • 다만 2/5와 같이 분자가 1이 아닐 경우 서수사 뒤에 복수접사 '-s'를 붙임. 즉 2/5는 'two fifths'임. 
  • 또 1/2, 1/4는 각각 (one) half, (one) quarter라고 하며 분자가 홀수일 경우 그 1/2이 몇 개, 1/4이 몇 개 있는 식으로 읽기도 함. 3/4를 'three quarters'라고 하거나 5/2를 'five halves'라고 하거나
  • 참고로 분자는 numerator, 분모는 denominator라고 함


√b: square root of b

  • 삼제곱근은 cube root, 그외는, 서수사를 이용함(fourth root, fifth root, etc)


a^x: a to the power of x

  • 단 제곱은 'a squared', 세제곱은 'a cubed'를 더 선호하며 그 외는 그냥 x 자리에 수 집어넣으면 됨
  • 'a to the fifth power'처럼 서수사를 이용하는 사람도 있음


평행: parallel

수직: perpendicular

몫: quotient


조립제법: synthetic division


인수분해: factoring

근의 공식: quadratic formula


근(해): root, solution


이동(평행&대칭): transformation

  • 평행이동: translate k units up/down 또는 translate k units right/left
  • 대칭이동: reflect over (x-axis/y-axis/origin/y=x, etc)


절댓값: absolute value


연립방정식: simultaneous equations / system of equations


함수: fuction


치역: range


정의역: domain


다항함수: polynomial function

  • 일차함수: linear function
  • 이차함수: quadratic function
  • 삼차함수: cubic function
  • 방정식은 걍 function을 equation으로 바꾸면 됨
  • y= (x-a)(x-b)(x-c): intercept form
  • y= (x-a)^2 + b: vertex form


유리함수: rational function


무리함수: irrational function


역함수: inverse function
